Solar Decathlon, the world's largest competition on innovations in solar energy, takes place between Friday and 15 this month in the Colombian city of Cali (southwest) with a focus on the development of sustainable homes.

“The Solar Decathlon is held every two years in each region; Europe does it in even-numbered years, the US version is in odd-numbered years, and we are betting that from now on the Latin American version will also be institutionalized every two years, so the next meeting would be in 2017 in Colombia or any other country of the region ”, the director of the competition, Carlos Rodríguez, told Sputnik Nóvosti.

The projects focus on residential spaces of between 60 and 80 square meters capable of running on solar energy, which would serve as a starting point to generate "urban planning projects on a larger scale," said Rodríguez.

The value of each home, once implemented as a multi-development solution, should not exceed the equivalent of about $ 32,000.

The competition was created by the United States Department of Energy in 2002 and has already been presented in several countries in Europe and Asia; It arrives for the first time in Latin America at the initiative of the Cali mayor's office, which obtained permission with the support of the central government.

According to Rodríguez, 15 green urban projects are competing to be implemented en masse in Cali and in the rest of the country, conceived by 650 participants from the United States, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Spain, Great Britain and Germany.

The 15 teams, each with 48 members including students and professors from 20 world universities, have also generated academic, technical and artistic spaces with the message of protecting the planet.

The meeting takes place simultaneously with the 21st Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 21), which is taking place in Paris until the 11th of this month to reach a global treaty that binds reduce emissions of gases that heat up the atmosphere.

Five of the 15 proposals that are exhibited at the Universidad del Valle will remain in place once the competition ends.

The initiative includes the construction of a theme park that can promote these technologies with the support of the private and public sectors, so that the model can be replicated in other countries in the region, the organizers said.
